Litron Laboratories has spent more than 30 years focused on the safety testing of new compounds and devices. From the ultra-competitive pharmaceutical and tobacco industries, to the demanding chemical, medical and dental device markets, to the complex needs of ink & toner manufacturers, the company helps clients assure the safety of their most promising ideas.
When Litron needed to train five scientists on how to operate a new piece of state-of-the-art equipment vital to its research and product development, it turned to RochesterWorks!, which helped the company get a grant for on-site training.
Litron received a $6,300 training grant from the Finger Lakes Wired Business Scholarship Program to train the scientists on the $165,000 flow cytometer, says Betsy Glavin, Administrative Associate at Litron.
Two trainers came on-site to the 14-employee firm, located at 200 Canal View Blvd., enabling even more employees to receive training.
"It was helpful to be trained on the very machine we are using on a daily basis," says Dorothea Torous, Director of Testing. Torous has worked at Litron for 23 years and updated her skills on the new equipment that runs on a completely new software platform.
"The thorough three and a half day training was vital to our company, as we provide services to customers worldwide that are using these new machines and software," Torous says.
"We can provide our customers who are using this flow cytometer with exceptional customer service," Glavin says.
Since the training, Litron has added one new scientist and expects to add several more.
In addition to the training, RochesterWorks! also partnered with Litron to speak with those looking for work.
"Job seekers learned how they can apply at Litron, about the interviewing processes, and how to stand out among other job seekers," says Kristy Ioele, Business Services Representative at RochesterWorks!
Several RochesterWorks! career counselors also toured Litron's lab over the summer to better familiarize themselves with Life Sciences industries and job outlook.
"RochesterWorks! works very hard to be in the forefront of workforce development in our region," Glavin says.
Additionally Litron participated in RochesterWorks! summer program for youth. Its high school student intern created a database for Litron’s new e-newsletter.
