Valeo Electrical Systems Incorporated (VESI) recently announced that it will close its Rochester location. While the closing date is still in negotiation, the company is already preparing to help transition its workforce with the help of RochesterWorks!
"We've been reducing our headcount for several years, mostly through early retirement options," says Maureen Terena, Union Benefit Representative. "But now it's a different climate because this location is actually closing and some 700 people will need to go on to their next career." Included in that count of 700 people are some 200 management-level employees.
Valeo had used RochesterWorks! in the past to help its early retirement employees learn about resources and opportunities available to them, including training and other support. "RochesterWorks! came on site and offered workshops to employees, as well as consulting services," explains Terena.
Now, Valeo will look to RochesterWorks! to provide even more comprehensive transitions services to help all the employees at its Rochester VESI location. "Some people may qualify for Trade Act funding and services, others may be able to receive other training and support," says Terena. "We're looking to RochesterWorks! to continue helping us coordinate those services and educate us on the opportunities available."
In addition to receiving on-site transition services in the future such as workshops, VESI employees have already started using RochesterWorks! career center resources. "Our employees are much more aware now of the services that RochesterWorks! provides, and are taking advantage of them. We post things that RochesterWorks! coordinates in the community, and also give all employees an information sheet on RochesterWorks! services when they leave."
One area that Terena notes many employees have taken advantage of and enjoy is retraining for a career in nursing. With the various funding opportunities available for those choosing a career in nursing, it is an excellent opportunity for job seekers in search of a change. "Employees have been very happy with not only the training services, but also all the services that RochesterWorks! offers, and their availability to them," says Terena. She also notes the convenience and efficiency of how RochesterWorks! coordinates with the Department of Labor and other resources to help employees receive the full scope of services and benefits available to them.
"RochesterWorks! has really been a wonderful resource center for us and has always provided everything we requested," says Terena. "Our employees have really gotten a lot of great help and they are thrilled that these services are available to them. We look forward to continuing to work with RochesterWorks! as we transition through the closing of our Rochester plant." |
