Career Navigator Class Marked the Beginning of Successful Job Search

In June 2009, after holding down a steady job as a systems engineer for nearly 12 years with the same company, Alex Khazanov was laid off.

He visited RochesterWorks! in hopes of retraining, but unfortunately the organization had run out of funding for those courses. By August, he had enrolled in the first Career Navigator class to learn more about marketing his talents and expertise.

“It was a great experience, having the support in this type of situation where you don’t feel alone,” says Alex, who gained new professional acquaintances and friends. “You see yourself among a very capable group of people and you feel that there’s no problem with you – it’s just the economy. You’re in very good company.”

“You can’t give up and you can’t stop looking. You just keep going and make new connections and help each other. That’s all we can do.”

The week-long course was only the start of Alex’s job search makeover. He updated his resume, improved his LinkedIn profile, and started networking more. His hard work and determination paid off. Not only did he get a job offer – he got three of them in the same week, one of which came more than two months after an interview.

The search team, facilitated by Charlie Newton, was instrumental in Alex’s negotiations, “keeping myself accountable,” and providing tips on ensuring success in the first few months of employment.

Alex started his job in November, after logging more than 800 hours during his search.

“You can’t give up and you can’t stop looking,” he says. “You just keep going and make new connections and help each other. That’s all we can do.”
