“My philosophy for job seekers,” Grace said, “is that you should go it for even if you don’t have all the qualifications. Job requirements are often a wish list rather than actual requirements. I told Reba they may be willing to compromise if she presented well. The worst they can do is tell you no!” --Grace Melton, Employment Specialist

Laid Off After 27 Years, Ben Credits RochesterWorks! Tools & Resources for Helping Him Retrain for a New Management Position

Benjamin Banks came to RochesterWorks! after being laid off from Kodak after 27 years as an Operations Manager.  After networking and doing some research, he discovered that he needed additional training in order to acquire a similar position.

When Ben came to RochesterWorks!, he became fully engaged in the many workshops offered.  He attended all of the core workshops, “Right” your Resume, Advanced Interviewing Skills, and the networking workshops.  He was able to develop and hone his networking skills, interviewing skills, and resume development.  After networking and participating in informational meetings, Ben discovered that updating his skills would make him more marketable in his job search.

He applied for Workforce Investment Act training funds for the Professional in Human Resources Certification Program at St. John Fisher College.  He was able to complete this program in just a few weeks, which prepared him to obtain the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) Certificate. This was the key certification he needed to land a position as a Human Resources Manager.

After completing his training, Ben continued to diligently search for a job.  He networked and volunteered at Center for Disability Rights in its Human Resource department.  He also took it upon himself to partake in an internship with the City of Rochester.

Eventually he acquired a full-time position with the United Way as a Human Resource Manager.  Ben credits this accomplishment to the assistance he received at RochesterWorks!  and says the primary thing that helped him in his job search process was networking and having the tools and resources that RochesterWorks has available to job seekers.

Ben is a true example that by attending workshops, updating your skills through training, networking and going above and beyond the “normal” job search process really pays off in the end.
