On November 10, 2009, RochesterWorks!, in collaboration with the NYS Department of Labor and WHEC Channel 10, held the First Annual Career Conference. The Conference, entitled “Surviving Job Loss in a Changing Economy,” was the first of its kind in the area. More than 1,100 people attended taking advantage of workshops, and visiting with a variety of employers, community agencies, and educational institutions.
Professional coaches and trainers facilitated more than 20 workshops, which were a major feature of the event. The workshops included panel discussions with local industry experts and job seekers who have landed jobs; communication skills and marketing strategies; financial workshops; stress management; and the use of technology and social networking tools in job search and career development.
Twenty five businesses including Klein Steel, The Employment Store, Unity Health and more, were hiring for positions such as: Certified Nursing Assistant, Sales Manager and CNC Operator. Almost 15 community service agencies provided information to attendees regarding supportive services. Local colleges and adult educational organizations provided information on vocational training programs and financial resources. Overall, this event was a great success!
Some comments from attendees included: “The seminars were excellent! I learned a lot from the ones that I have attended.” And “The variety of employers represented and the workshops were impressive.”
Save the Date!
The next Career Conference, which will be larger and serve even more people, is planned for May 27, 2010 at Monroe Community College. Look for more information about this upcoming event at our Web site in the future.
