Each month, RochesterWorks! Career Counselors visit a local business to learn about their hiring practices and opportunities in industries ranging from Biotechnology and Advanced Manufacturing to Printing and Business Services.
At each visit, Human Resource representatives share their hiring practices and provide a tour of the facility. From these experiences our Career Counselors take away valuable information that they can share with clients, such as key resume and interviewing tips as well as the best way to apply to the company and a contact person.
“As a job search advisor, going on tours of various companies really helps me to effectively promote these companies employment opportunities to our job seekers," says Kathy Ziegler,
Job Search Team Leader at RochesterWorks! " Also, I am able to really understand the environment as well as what the corporate culture is like and I am able to give job seekers more informed insight into what they can expect.”
Each business has different hiring processes and looks for different key pieces in an applicant's resume and interview.
“Helene Schechter,
Career Services Advisor, for RochesterWorks! adds, "As a career advisor, going on tours at the employer sites helps me work with my clients. I am able to talk about the work environment and get a better understanding of what tasks at the company employees perform. I am also able to promote the employer to a client who may not be aware of that employer and what they offer their employees.”
The counselors gather the information from the various companies to help them in assisting their clients with successful job searches.
“It has been rewarding participating in all the employer visits," says Louis I. Lopez
Local Veterans Employment Representative for RochesterWorks! " I certainly have learned a great deal on research, analysis of local market conditions and employment opportunities these individual companies offer. These visits build relationships with employers by promoting partnerships as well as being able to provide better job search assistance to my veteran customers.”
